• Not all schools require an essay and some schools require multiple essays. 

• Your college essay is an opportunity for the reader of your application to learn aspects about you that they might not glean from your grades, test scores, or list of activities. 

• Reflect on your experiences, values, and life goals. Use the essay to emphasize 2-3 personal qualities. Remember, you aren’t writing a complete autobiography. 

• The personal content of your essay is more important than a sophisticated writing style. Cover the basics (correct spelling, grammar and composition) and then write in your own voice.

• Your essay should be a thoughtful and well polished piece of writing, so allow time to brainstorm, draft, revise, seek feedback and finalize.
